Humility to follow 1 Nephi 18:10

1 Nephi 18:10
Humility to follow
A photograph of a woman standing over a kitchen sink, paired with a quote by Brigham Young: “Give me patience … until I can understand it for myself.”

What
10 And I, Nephi, began to fear exceedingly lest the Lord should be angry with us, and smite us because of our iniquity, that we should be swallowed up in the depths of the sea; wherefore, I, Nephi, began to speak to them with much soberness; but behold they were aangry with me, saying: We will not that our younger brother shall be abruler over us.

Nephi was afraid because of the wickedness of his brothers so he began to speak to them and try to persuade them but the brothers were angry that their younger brother would tell them what to do and rule over them.

Why
Laman and Lemuel were rebelling against their hardships. They desired a life of comfort and ease and thought they could have that in Jerusalem. They were proud. They were jealous of Nephi and resented that he should try to lead them and tell them what to do. Even though they had seen an angel, and been shocked when Nephi touched them, they were still fighting it. They were completely lacking in the humility department.

Genesis Ch 27
Rebekah guides Jacob in seeking blessings—Jacob is blessed to have dominion and rule over peoples and nations—Esau hates Jacob and plans to slay him—Rebekah fears that Jacob may marry one of the daughters of Heth.

Power Over Satan
How, then, may we resist the evil one? In all his evil doings, the adversary can go no further than the transgressor permits him to go,and we can gain complete power to resist the evils caused by Satan through adherence to the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.Members of the Church may have the blessing of the Holy Ghost, the prompter, as a companion as well, and when the Holy Ghost is really within us, Satan must remain without. Study of the scriptures, prayer, faithful living of the commandments of the Lord, the discharge of church obligations and duties, being a considerate neighbor, and using the heaven-sent program of family home evenings can provide a basis for having the Holy Ghost as a constant companion and protector, which will result in peace and happiness.

Be Thou Humble

The Savior taught His followers that they must humble themselves as a little child in order to enter into the kingdom of heaven.6 As we raise our own children, we need to help them remain humble as they mature into adulthood. We do not do this by breaking their spirit through unkindness or by being too harsh in our discipline. While nurturing their self-confidence and self-esteem,we need to teach them the qualities of selflessness, kindness, obedience, lack of pride, civility, and unpretentiousness. We need them to learn to take joy inthe successes of siblings and friends. President Howard W. Hunter taught that“our genuine concern should be for the success of others.”7 If not, our children can become obsessed with self-promotion and outdoing others, jealousy, and resentment for the triumphs of peers. I’m grateful for a mother who, when seeing I was becoming too full of myself as a boy, would say, “Son, a little bit of humility right now would go a long way.”
But humility is not something reserved to be taught only to children. We must all strive to become more humble. Humility is essential to gain the blessings ofthe gospel. Humility enables us to have broken hearts when we sin or make mistakes and makes it possible for us to repent. Humility enables us to be better parents, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, neighbors and friends.
On the other hand, unnecessary pride can dissolve family relationships, breakup marriages, and destroy friendships. It is especially important to remember humility when you feel contention rising in your home. Think of all the heartache you can avoid by humbling yourself to say, “I’m sorry”; “That was inconsiderate of me”; “What would you like to do?”; “I just wasn’t thinking”; or“I’m very proud of you.” If these little phrases were humbly used, there would be less contention and more peace in our homes.

A Pattern for Peace

In our journey through mortality, as glorious as our intended destination maybe and as exhilarating as the journey may prove, we will all be subject to trials and sorrow along the way. Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin taught: “The dial on the wheel of sorrow eventually points to each of us. At one time or another,everyone must experience sorrow. No one is exempt.”1 “The Lord in His wisdom does not shield anyone from grief or sadness.”2 However, our ability to travel this road in peace is, in large part, dependent on whether or not we too have a hard time thinking about Jesus.
Peace of mind, peace of conscience, and peace of heart are not determined by our ability to avoid trials, sorrow, or heartache. Despite our sincere pleas, not every storm will change course, not every infirmity will be healed, and we may not fully understand every doctrine, principle, or practice taught by prophets, seers, and revelators. Nevertheless, we have been promised peace—

Lucifer, Cain, Esau, the sons of Jacob all sought to destroy their brothers. Love in the family does not always come easily when members choose not to follow Christ. Peace comes through humility. To be teachable and obedient to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Accepting the Lord's Will and Timing-1 Nephi 18:9

1 Nephi 18:9

Accepting the Lord's Will and Timing/Courage

What
9 And after we had been adriven forth before the wind for the space of many days, behold, my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and also their wives began to make themselves merry, insomuch that they began to dance, and to sing, and to speak with much brudeness, yea, even that they did forget by what power they had been brought thither; yea, they were lifted up unto exceeding rudeness.

Why
They slipped back into their rebelliousness. Things got a little dull and they didn't have faith. They were ungrateful for their blessings. They forgot about the power of God that they had seen and that had taken them forward. They did not accept the Lord's will and timing and they were rebellious cowards.

Pattern

Exodus Chapter 32

Rioting and rebelliousness
Aaron makes a golden calf, which Israel worships—Moses serves as a mediator between God and rebellious Israel—Moses breaks the tablets of stone—The Levites slay about 3,000 rebels—Moses pleads and intercedes for the people.
Driven
Ether 6
The Jaredite barges are driven by the winds to the promised land—The people praise the Lord for His goodness—

Christ
Matt. Chapter 27
Jesus is accused and condemned before Pilate—Barabbas is released—Jesus is mocked, crucified, and buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathæa.
Matt. 8
25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye afearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and brebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

From a Church Educational System devotional, “That We Might ‘Not … Shrink,’” delivered at the University of Texas at Arlington on March 3, 2013.
Accepting The Lord's Will and Timing
In his October 1997 general conference message, Elder Maxwell taught with great authenticity: “As we confront our own … trials and tribulations, we too can plead with the Father, just as Jesus did, that we ‘might not … shrink’—meaning to retreat or to recoil (D&C 19:18). Not shrinking is much more important than surviving! Moreover, partaking of a bitter cup without becoming bitter is likewise part of the emulation of Jesus.”1
The Savior did not shrink in Gethsemane or on Golgotha.
Elder Maxwell also did not shrink. This mighty Apostle pressed forward steadfastly and was blessed with additional time in mortality to love, to serve, to teach, and to testify. Those concluding years of his life were an emphatic exclamation point to his example of devoted discipleship—through both his words and his deeds.
I believe most of us likely would expect a man with the spiritual capacity, experience, and stature of Elder Maxwell to face serious illness and death with an understanding of God’s plan of happiness, with assurance and grace, and with dignity. But I testify that such blessings are not reserved exclusively for General Authorities or for a select few members of the Church.
Many of the lessons we are to learn in mortality can be received only through the things we experience and sometimes suffer. And God expects and trusts us to face temporary mortal adversity with His help so we can learn what we need to learn and ultimately become what we are to become in eternity. But some things I absolutely do know. I know we are spirit sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father. I know the Eternal Father is the author of the plan of happiness. I know Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. I know Jesus enabled the Father’s plan through His infinite and eternal Atonement. I know the Lord, who was “bruised, broken, [and] torn for us,”2 can succor and strengthen “his people according to their infirmities” (Alma 7:12). And I know one of the greatest blessings of mortality is to not shrink and to allow our individual will to be “swallowed up in the will of the Father” (Mosiah 15:7).
Though I do not know everything about how and when and where and why these blessings occur, I do witness they are real. And I know that as you press forward in your lives with steadfast faith in Christ, you will have the capacity to not shrink.

“I will go forward, I will smile at the rage of the tempest, and ride fearlessly and triumphantly across the boisterous ocean of circumstance and the testimony of Jesus will light up a lamp that will guide my vision through the portals of immortality.”

Elder Bednar asked “do you have the faith NOT to be healed?” I think that is far more important than having the faith to be healed because it signifies real faith and submission. Praying with all of our hearts for what we want but being willing to accept His will. As we understand the plan of salvation we are strengthened.
Not shrinking under our trials as Nephi's brothers did but being strong like Nephi and Lehi even though they went through the same trials.

If we are humble and submissive we can be strong and face our trials with courage and know that he will drive our ship through the “ocean of circumstance” and we will go forward with faith and we will reach that promised land/ celestial kingdom.

105 Master The Tempest Is Raging
Matt. 8  23 ¶And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
24 And, behold, there arose a great atempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye afearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and brebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the asea obey him!
