Families and Hardship 1 Nephi 18:7

1 Nephi 18:7
Theme- families and Harship

What
7 And now, my father had begat two sons in the wilderness; the elder was called  Jacob and the younger son Joseph .

Even though Lehi and Sariah were traveling and in the wilderness and suffering great hardship, the Lord blessed them with two more sons. That made the journey even harder for them and especially for Sariah. It also gives an idea that they were maybe still in their forties or at least still in their childbearing years, when they began this journey. They four sons who were perhaps in their teens or early 20's and and now two more little ones.

Revelation from Joseph Smith tells us that the two oldest sons of Ishmael were married to Lehi and Sariah's daughters. So that makes two daughters and six sons.

2 Nephi 5:6
6 Wherefore, it came to pass that I, Nephi, did take my family, and also aZoram and his family, and Sam, mine elder brother and his family, and Jacob and Joseph, my younger brethren, and also my sisters, and all those who would go with me. And all those who would go with me were those who believed in the bwarnings and the revelations of God; wherefore, they did hearken unto my words.

Ishmael and his wife probably had two sons and seven daughters. One daughter may have been older than the two boys as she is the one who married Zoram.

That would make 10 in Lehi's family and 11 in Ishmael's family plus Zoram. A total of 22 people plus many grandchildren who were also born in the wilderness under hard circumstances. We only know that they did have children during their sojourn. Perhaps Ishmael was a little older than Lehi, we don't know, but his oldest daughter married Zoram. Ishmael died on the journey

1 Nephi 16:7

7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, took one of the daughters of Ishmael to wife; and also, my brethren took of the daughters of Ishmael to wife; and also Zoram took the eldest daughter of Ishmael to wife.

1 Nephi 16:34

34 And it came to pass that Ishmael died, and was buried in the place which was called Nahom.

1 Nephi 17:1

1 And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness.

1 Nephi 17:1

1 And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness.

1 Nephi 17:4
.  4 And we did sojourn for the space of many years, yea, even eight years in the wilderness.

If Ishmael's wife didn't bear children in the wilderness that would leave 12 couples who were of childbearing age. If they each had two children like Sariah then there would have been 24 children born Since it was an 8 year journey they may have had many more children than 2 per couple during that time. in the wilderness That would be a total of 46 people and it could have been more or less than that. We can be sure that there was a large family there to board that ship.

Ensign 1976- September- In Search of Lehi's Trail Part 1
So, after a great deal of study, we felt almost ready to construct a hypothetical passenger list and itinerary for Lehi’s departure from Jerusalem. We began with his party. We know that Lehi took his wife Sariah and four sons. The party may have included daughters as well, since Nephi casually mentions “my sisters” many years later when they were in the promised land (2 Ne. 5:6); but they could have been born in the wilderness. Later the group was joined by Ishmael and his wife, at least two married sons and their families (1 Ne. 7:6), five unmarried daughters, and Zoram, Laban’s former bondsman. It seems safe to estimate, then, that Lehi’s party faced the desert with at least twenty people. (See Illustration 4.)
Elder Erastus Snow noted that the Prophet Joseph Smith said Lehi’s daughters married Ishmael’s two sons. (JD, 23:184.)

Part 1 and part 2 of In Search of Lehi's Trail are valuable resources giving a lot of history and background to help understand Lehi's journey.

Why
They journeyed for 8 years. During that time, the Lord sent them marriages and children to continue on the posterity. They were a chosen people who would be led to the promised land. It would not end with just the original family of Lehi. They were commanded to “multiply and replenish the earth”

Genesis 1:28

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Pattern

Genesis 9:1

1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenishthe earth.
2 And Adam knew his wife, and she bare unto him sons and daughters, and they began to multiplyand to replenish the earth.
28 And the Gods said: We will bless them. And the Gods said: We will cause them to be fruitful andmultiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Christ
Multiplying and replenishing the earth is a part of the plan of salvation. So this verse does point to Christ and the plan which He and the Father are the authors of.

The Plan of Happiness

The commandment to multiply and replenish the earth has never been rescinded. It is essential to the plan of redemption and is the source of human happiness. Through the righteous exercise of this power, we may come close to our Father in Heaven and experience a fulness of joy, even godhood. The power of procreation is not an incidental part of the plan; it is the plan of happiness; it is the key to happiness.
The desire to mate in humankind is constant and very strong. Our happiness in mortal life, our joy and exaltation are dependent upon how we respond to these persistent, compelling physical desires. As the procreative power matures in early manhood and womanhood, very personal feelings occur, in a natural way, unlike any other physical experience.

The family is ordained of God. Families are central to our Heavenly Father’s plan here on earth and through the eternities. After Adam and Eve were joined in marriage, the scripture reads, “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.”2 In our day prophets and apostles have declared, “The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force.”3
This commandment has not been forgotten or set aside in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.4 We express deep gratitude for the enormous faith shown by husbands and wives (especially our wives) in their willingness to have children. When to have a child and how many children to have are private decisions to be made between a husband and wife and the Lord. These are sacred decisions—decisions that should be made with sincere prayer and acted on with great faith.
...It was not in the Garden of Eden that Adam and Eve bore their first child. Leaving the garden, “Adam [and Eve] began to till the earth. … Adam knew his wife, and she [bore] … sons and daughters, and [acting in faith] they began to multiply and to replenish the earth.”11
It was not in their Jerusalem home, with gold, silver, and precious things, that Lehi and Sariah, acting in faith, bore their sons Jacob and Joseph. It was in the wilderness. Lehi spoke of his son Jacob as “my first-born in the days of my tribulation in the wilderness.”12 Lehi said of Joseph, “Thou wast born in the wilderness of [our] afflictions; yea, in the days of [our] greatest sorrow did thy mother bear thee.”13
In the book of Exodus, a man and woman married and, acting in faith, had a baby boy. There was no welcoming sign on the front door to announce his birth. They hid him because Pharaoh had instructed that every newborn male Israelite should be “cast into the river.”14 You know the rest of the story: the baby lovingly laid in a little ark made of

Families and hardship are well acquainted..Married couples should have children if it is possible. It doesn't have to be easy or convenient. We are expected to go through hardships in this life. In doing so we learn to rely on the Lord. The family proclamation has been given to us today. It is to live by and cherish. Families are eternal. If we seek the Lord, he will bless us to find joy even in hard times. Lehi and Sariah and their family were great examples of this.

Be Prepared

1 Nephi 18:6

Theme- Be Prepared

What
6 And it came to pass that on the morrow, after we had prepared all things, much fruits and meat from the wilderness, and honey in abundance, and provisions according to that which the Lord had commanded us, we did go down into the ship, with all our loading and our seeds, and whatsoever thing we had brought with us, every one according to his age; wherefore, we did all go down into the  ship, with our wives and our children.

They prepared as well as possible for this journey across the ocean. They had a supply of food to last them for the journey and seeds to plant when they got there. Apparently, they engaged everyone, young and old in this preparation.

Why
They prepared because they were commanded to prepare and because they knew that it would be a long journey across the ocean. There would be not much chance to obtain other food on the way.

Pattern

Ezekiel 38:7

7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 But behold, to their uttermost astonishment, they were prepared for them, in a manner which never had been known among the children of Lehi. Now they were prepared for the Lamanites, to battle after the manner of the instructions of Moroni.

Alma 37:46

46 O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness of the way; for so was it with our fathers; for so was it prepared for them, that if they would look they might live; even so it is with us. The way is prepared, and if we will look we may live forever.
6 Now the leaders of the Lamanites had supposed, because of the greatness of their numbers, yea, they supposed that they should be privileged to come upon them as they had hitherto done; yea, and they had also prepared themselves with shields, and with breastplates; and they had also prepared themselves with garments of skins, yea, very thick garments to cover their nakedness.

Ether 12:32

32 And I also remember that thou hast said that thou hast prepared a house for man, yea, even among the mansions of thy Father, in which man might have a more excellent hope; wherefore man must hope, or he cannot receive an inheritance in the place which thou hast prepared.
28 Behold, are ye stripped of pride? I say unto you, if ye are not ye are not prepared to meet God. Behold ye must prepare quickly; for the kingdom of heaven is soon at hand, and such an one hath not eternal life.

Doctrine and Covenants 29:8

8 Wherefore the decree hath gone forth from the Father that they shall be gathered in unto one place upon the face of this land, to prepare their hearts and be prepared in all things against the day when tribulation and desolation are sent forth upon the wicked.
29 Behold, I say, is there one among you who is not stripped of envy? I say unto you that such an one is not prepared; and I would that he shouldprepare quickly, for the hour is close at hand, and he knoweth not when the time shall come; for such an one is not found guiltless.

Hebrews 11:7

7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

Genesis 7:9
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

A Time
To Prepare.
Alma spoke of priorities when he taught that “this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God” (Alma 12:24). How to best use the rich heritage of time to prepare to meet God may require some guidance, but surely we would place the Lord and our families at the top of the list. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf reminded us that “in family relationships love is really spelled t-i-m-e” (“Of Things That Matter Most,” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2010, 22). I testify that when help is prayerfully and sincerely sought, our Heavenly Father will help us to give emphasis to that which deserves our time above something else.
The poor use of time is a close cousin of idleness. As we follow the command to “cease to be idle” (D&C 88:124), we must be sure that being busy also equates to being productive. For example, it is wonderful to have the means of instant communication quite literally at our fingertips, but let us be sure that we do not become compulsive fingertip communicators. I sense that some are trapped in a new time-consuming addiction—one that enslaves us to be constantly checking and sending social messages and thus giving the false impression of being busy and productive.

Prepare for the Days of Tribulation
For over forty years, in a spirit of love, members of the Church have been counseled to be thrifty and self-reliant; to avoid debt; pay tithes and a generous fast offering; be industrious; and have sufficient food, clothing, and fuel on hand to last at least one year.
Today there are compelling reasons to reemphasize this counsel. We heard it done effectively in that great welfare meeting this morning. May I add just a word.
...More than ever before, we need to learn and apply the principles of economic self-reliance. We do not know when the crisis involving sickness or unemployment may affect our own circumstances. We do know that the Lord has decreed global calamities for the future and has warned and forewarned us to be prepared. For this reason the Brethren have repeatedly stressed a “back to basics” program for temporal and spiritual welfare.
Today, I emphasize a most basic principle: home production and storage. Have you ever paused to realize what would happen to your community or nation if transportation were paralyzed or if we had a war or depression? How would you and your neighbors obtain food? How long would the corner grocery store—or supermarket—sustain the needs of the community?
I bear you my testimony that President Heber J. Grant was inspired of the Lord in establishing the Church Welfare program. The First Presidency was inspired when they made the first public announcement in 1936 and declared the prime purpose of Church welfare was “to help the people help themselves” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1936, p. 3). I bear witness to that inspired counsel from 1936 to the present day that the Saints lay up a year’s supply of food. When President Spencer W. Kimball persistently admonishes the members to plant gardens and fruit trees and produce our own food, he is likewise inspired of the Lord.
Be faithful, my brothers and sisters, to this counsel and you will be blessed—yes, the most blessed people in all the earth. You are good people. I know that. But all of us need to be better than we are. Let us be in a position so we are able to not only feed ourselves through the home production and storage, but others as well.
May God bless us to be prepared for the days which lie ahead, which may be the most severe yet. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Apply
Life is a journey. We plan and work for a better future but we do not know what our circumstances will be . We are guided by prophets to receive revelation for the membership of the church. We have scriptures and local leaders who guide and help us and we have our Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ who love us and watch over us. They know us far better than we know ourselves.
They have given us guidelines sot that we can be prepared for the troubles that will most certainly beset us during this life. The wise thing to do is to prepare ourselves in every way that we can. Spiritually, mentally and physically.
What are we preparing for? The future of course!. Ultimately, we are preparing for our home beyond this life. Life goes on after we leave this one. He has prepared a mansion for us if we have prepared ourselves to be in it.

Doctrine and Covenants 72:4

4 For he who is faithful and wise in time is accounted worthy to inherit the mansions prepared for him of my Father.
2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
6 And if thou art faithful unto the end thou shalt have a crown of immortality, and eternal life in the mansions which I have prepared in the house of my Father.
These mansions are real. Just as real as the house you live in now! Relationships are real and lasting. That is if we are prepared for them through divine ordinances.

If we have faith in Him and truly believe in Him, then we will have peace in our hearts and be able to prepare everything that is needed.

For most of us, the journey is long and we are tossed around all over the place but, He an calm the seas.
Let us plan and prepare with our families, for our future in this life so it will mesh seamlessly with that future home with family across the veil.

I love this quote from Eliza R. Snow
“I will go forward, I will smile at the rage of the tempest, and ride fearlessly and triumphantly across the boisterous ocean of circumstance and the testimony of Jesus will light up a lamp that will guide my vision though the portals of immortality. “

Alma 34:32-33

33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not  procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

Commitment- 1 Nephi 18:5

1 Nephi 18:5

Commitment

What
5 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came unto my father, that we should arise and go down into the ship.

Nephi was in charge of building the ship. Lehi was still the prophet and leader. He is the one who received the commandment to gather his family and supplies and go down into the ship. Probably he was actively engaged in working and preparing the ship also but the record that we have in the Book of Mormon is in Nephi's writings so we get it from his point of view. It is an excellent record and perfectly accurate but the feelings and directions that Lehi received may be left out because Lehi wrote his own record. That record is not available to us but we have sufficient record to direct us.

To enter the ship was to make a full commitment to keep the commandment to cross the ocean and begin a new life.

Why
The family was being protected from the enemies in Jerusalem who would have destroyed them and their religion. They were being given a new start in a new place but not without a lot of work and suffering and learning in the school of hard knocks. They were being tested and tried. Now they had built the ship and gathered all kinds of supplies and were ready to begin the journey. It was a total commitment to get on the ship and sail. There could be no turning back.

Pattern
We see this pattern as the Latter Day Saints left their homes in Kirtland and in Nauvoo for a better place where they could live their religion without persecution. Others left their homes in foreign countries to come to Zion and sacrificed much..

Moses and the Israelite s also left Egypt with much difficulty for the right to be free and to worship as they chose.

Noah's family boarded the ark and closed it up when the rain started that had been prophesied.

Abraham and Lot took up their journey also.

This pattern is applied as we follow the Prophet today as well.

Deuteronomy 8:20

20 As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lordyour God.

Jeremiah 42:6

6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.

Zechariah 6:15

15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord, and ye shall know that theLord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey thevoice of the Lord your God.

1 Nephi 16:26

26 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lordsaid unto him: Look upon the ball, and behold the things which are written.

Deuteronomy 28:2

2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voiceof the Lord thy God.

Helaman 12:23

23 Therefore, blessed are they who will repent and hearken unto the voice of the Lord their God; for these are they that shall be saved.

Stay On The Boat
The Lord in His goodness has provided help, including a boat, essential supplies such as life jackets, and experienced river guides who give guidance and safety instructions to help us make our way down the river of life to our final destination.
Let’s think about rule number one: stay in the boat!
President Brigham Young commonly employed “the Old Ship Zion” as a metaphor for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He said on one occasion: “We are in the midst of the ocean. A storm comes on, and, as sailors say, she labors very hard. ‘I am not going to stay here,’ says one; ‘I don’t believe this is the “Ship Zion.”’ ‘But we are in the midst of the ocean.’ ‘I don’t care, I am not going to stay here.’ Off goes the coat, and he jumps overboard. Will he not be drowned? Yes. So with those who leave this Church. It is the ‘Old Ship Zion,’ let us stay it.
And finally, President Young reminded the Saints: “We are on the old ship Zion. … [God] is at the helm and will stay there. … All is right, sing Hallelujah, for the Lord is here. He dictates, guides and directs. If the people will have implicit confidence in their God, never forsake their covenants nor their God, He will guide us right.”3
Given the challenges we all face today, how do we stay on the Old Ship Zion?

2015 Ballard
God Is At The Helm
In last October’s general conference, I invited listeners to follow Brigham Young’s counsel to stay on the Old Ship Zion, which is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to hold on with both hands.1 Since then, I am happy to know that some of my family and others were listening and have asked me this question: “What’s in the Old Ship Zion that we should hang on to?” I reminded them of what President Brigham Young said: “We are on the old ship Zion. … [God] is at the helm and will stay there. … He dictates, guides and directs. If the people will have implicit confidence in their God, never forsake their covenants nor their God, He will guide us right.”2
Clearly, our Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ have outfitted the Old Ship Zion with clear and simple eternal truths that will help us stay the course through the troubled waters of mortal life. Here are just a few.
The Church of Jesus Christ has always been led by living prophets and apostles. Though mortal and subject to human imperfection, the Lord’s servants are inspired to help us avoid obstacles that are spiritually life threatening and to help us pass safely through mortality to our final, ultimate, heavenly destination.
Apply
Lehi's family boarded the ship to sail to a place they have never seen or heard of except from the Lord as the “promised land”. That it would be a leap of faith and total commitment. When we are baptized into the Church we also make a commitment. We promise to keep the commandments and serve the Lord. To take His name upon us. As we are baptized by water, so the waters of the great sea “baptized' that ship and all who were in it symbolically. . They totally relied on Him to take them to the place of freedom to worship. There was no going back. They would follow the prophet all the way.
We make a commitment when we make covenants with our Heavenly Father wen we are Baptized, partake of the sacrament and when we receive temple covenants.
Staying true to our covenants with total commitment brings great peace and blessings. If we stand firm and steadfast then we can receive eternal blessings. These things apply to our Sabbath Day observance, fulfilling callings and keeping the commandments. Commitment means that we are all the way in 100 percent.

Humility -1 Nephi 18:4

1 Nephi 18:4

Theme- Humility

4 And it came to pass that after I had finished the ship, according to the word of the Lord, my brethren beheld that it was good, and that the workmanship thereof was exceedingly fine; wherefore, they did humble themselves again before the Lord.

Humility, Humble

Why
The rebellious brothers had humbled themselves before the Lord because they had participated in a revelatory experience as they witnessed that Nephi received direction from the Lord to build this ship in a way they had never ever heard or seen before. They were pleased with the end result and recognized that the Lord had been their teacher and guide and they understood and became submissive and teachable and obedient to the teachings given them of the Lord through their younger brother, Nephi.

Pattern
Chronicles 7:14
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall  humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Matt.18:4
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

James 4:10
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

D&C 112:10
10 Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.

D&C 136:32-33
32 Let him that is  ignorant learn wisdom by humbling himself and calling upon the Lord his God, that his eyes may be opened that he may see, and his ears opened that he may hear;
33 For my Spirit is sent forth into the world to enlighten the humble and contrite, and to the condemnation of the ungodly.

Ether 12:27
“And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; … for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

Christ
It was the Lord who directed the building of the ship and the brothers of Nephi did humble themselves before Him.
Jesus was humble and followed the teachings and will of his Father in Heaven even to the point of sacrificing his own life and atoning for the sins of the world. He said I the Lord's prayer,

Be Thou Humble
The Savior taught His followers that they must humble themselves as a little child in order to enter into the kingdom of heaven.6 As we raise our own children, we need to help them remain humble as they mature into adulthood. We do not do this by breaking their spirit through unkindness or by being too harsh in our discipline. While nurturing their self-confidence and self-esteem, we need to teach them the qualities of selflessness, kindness, obedience, lack of pride, civility, and unpretentiousness. We need them to learn to take joy in the successes of siblings and friends. President Howard W. Hunter taught that “our genuine concern should be for the success of others.”7 If not, our children can become obsessed with self-promotion and outdoing others, jealousy, and resentment for the triumphs of peers. I’m grateful for a mother who, when seeing I was becoming too full of myself as a boy, would say, “Son, a little bit of humility right now would go a long way.”
But humility is not something reserved to be taught only to children. We must all strive to become more humble. Humility is essential to gain the blessings of the gospel. Humility enables us to have broken hearts when we sin or make mistakes and makes it possible for us to repent. Humility enables us to be better parents, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, neighbors and friends.
On the other hand, unnecessary pride can dissolve family relationships, break up marriages, and destroy friendships.
Apply
Applying humility to our lives is difficult because when we think we are humble then we are probably not and when we think we are not then perhaps we really are,
Give the Lord credit where credit is due. That would be for everything good that comes to us. Being teachable and eager to learn good things.
Think of others instead of ourselves. Serve with unselfishness. Forget yourself and focus on what you can do for others. If you do that you will have joy in your service and you will be effective.
Help children to think about how others feel and what their needs are instead of being all wrapped up in themselves. Teach them to follow the Lord. To pray and to follow Him.
A humble person is a strong person who knows the source of their power comes from God.

35 Yea, I know that God will give liberally to him that asketh. Yea, my God will give me, if I ask not amiss; therefore I will lift up my voice unto thee; yea, I will cry unto thee, my God, the rock of myerighteousness. Behold, my voice shall forever ascend up unto thee, my rock and mine everlasting God. Amen.
