STAND YE IN HOLY PLACES AND BE NOT MOVED (MOOVED)

D&C 87:8 and see Matthew 24:15

A talk given at an LDS Young Women In Excellence Program. November 2013 by Barbara Matson

When Jerry ( my husband) and I were high school sweethearts we both had dairy cows. He had five and I had two. Our dads had assisted us in this venture. So picture this a little later. Two young farmers on a date. He says, Oh, Barbara, will you marry me? I answered sincerely, “Yes but-I won't milk your cows !”. (And I might add, I didn't)

Do you know the story of Johnny Lingo? He was so wise that he offered eight cows for Mahana to her father as a part of his petition to marry her and to show his love. He knew that it would build her self esteem. Johnny saw her true value as a person. No one in the village thought she was attractive or worth anything. It was said that her father would have given her away for the horns of one cow!

I think that my father took it into another realm. He said Jerry, Barbara comes with two cows! Hmm What a bargain I was! Of course he would jump at that kind of a deal! :)

Here is a picture of me as a young bride with our mixed herd of cows.

Let me go back a ways farther than that. When I turned twelve (like yesterday) my dad announced that I was finally old enough to help milk the cows and I would get $3.50 every two weeks from the milk check! I was so excited! My brother (who was 3 1/2 years older than me) and I then began milking the cows together every evening. That is right, EVERY evening. Rain or shine, summer winter, birthdays, Christmas, Sundays. Cows have to be milked every day and on time! Just the same as they needed to be fed. Our Dad milked them in the morning except sometimes during the summer when we would do both.

Every evening by 5:00 we were in our old chore clothes and headed to the barn only a few yards from the house. It was not fun. I actually hated milking those cows but then again we made the best of it and had some great times in the old barn. We only had about eight cows. No my mom wasn't an eight cow wife. Dad bought them and raised their calves and built a little herd. Their names were something like-Ruby, Vera, Veda, Marg. Peggy and so forth these names were fun but We never spoke the names of our cows in public because.... They were named after the women we knew from our church! I do not think they would have been flattered to be named after a cow but we didn't do it maliciously. We just did it in a spirit of fun. We actually admired these women whose names we used. But, SHHHH, don't tell.

This was not your modern grade A dairy. We put oats and hay in the manger for them to eat so they would come in the barn when it was miking time. We, my brother, Lane and I, and our Collie dog, Ring, rounded them up from the pasture .We would walk down the lane about one quarter of a mile long, every afternoon to get the cows in and bring them to the barn. We would always take Ring and when we got to the gate we would just open the gate and say “Go get 'em Ring” and he would round up the cows and herd them through the gate and down the lane. Everybody needs a loyal friend like Ring and we could learn responsibilities, loyalty and a lot of things from him. Lane even used him on camping trips to clean the dishes. His pals never knew!

Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times.

brother Lane with Ring and baby cousin, John, with Ring

We used electric milkers and while they were running we would turn the volume of the music very loud on the big four foot high radio and dance together. So I had my personal, suave, ballroom dance instructor at age twelve. We learned all the modern fancy moves and thought we were pretty good.

To put the two milkers on and off we would squeeze between the cows wash their udders with a wet rag and throw the rag like a ball into the target bucket. Then put the milkers on the cows and dance for five minutes or so then change them to the next cows. Sometimes leaving them on too long (to the painful discomfort of the cows, ) It was a warm place to be in the winter when it was cold. Cows give out a lot of heat. On times when we were not dancing, I would sit on my one legged stool and recite readings or poems , talks or the articles of faith. Whatever I was learning at the time. After the milker came off we would “strip” the milk” which means to get the last milk by squishing it out by hand. It required some muscles to do this little trick. This is when we would practice squirting the warm milk into the open mouths of the not so tame, barn cats. They would only come close when we were milking so they could beg for a treat of warm milk ! There is probably a lesson here too about how the warm milk of the gospel can turn unruly people into happy, friendly folks. Just like those wild barn cats were transformed.

Matthew 5:6- Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.

Sometimes the cows would shift and step on our toes or swat us in the face with their tail which often had a little manure on it. Yuk, yuk, yuk! We had to clean up behind them as they would often “relieve themselves” when they were being milked. I hated that part but we kept our barn as clean as we could. Then we would haul the very heavy huge milker buckets out to the front of the barn and dump the milk through a strainer into the milk cans. Heavy work for a young girl but I became strong which proved later to be to my advantage whenever a boy would get fresh with me. Muscles are good! The boy I married was not one of those “fresh“boys, He was a perfect gentleman.

I often thought about the Savior being born in a barn and supposed that the cows, calves, cats and dogs and other animals there might be something like ours. The barn became a sacred place. A place to me where I could tell the cows my feelings and have a quiet place to pray when my brother was elsewhere. It was a place where there was love. Where two young kids learned to work and to appreciate each other. When my brother left for collage it became my job to do with some help from my dad.

Milking cows is like school or work or “Personal Progress.” It takes consistency, dependability, hard work and determination. It requires patience and even love and respect.

So what does it mean to “Stand in Holy places?” Can you find a holy place in your room? In your work place? Joseph Smith found holy places in a grove of trees, his bedroom and even in a prison where he was unjustly confined. Wherever he was he made it a holy place by his very presence and his actions and his love of God.

Where is your “holy place” by your bed, under the covers, in your closet, at a desk or just anywhere you are. Does your school locker look like a holy place?

Back to the cows...

I decided to take my heifer (a two year old /teenage cow named “Heart” because there was a heart on her forehead ) and join the dairy 4-H club. You see, there was this really cute boy there (yes, the one I eventually married). We began the 4-H meetings in the spring and the assignment every week was to work with our animals and groom them, tame them and teach them to lead so we could show them at the fair in the fall.

Here is a picture of me, with Heart. I am on my knees looking her straight in the eyes and begging her to behave!

I could catch Heart with a bucket of grain and put the halter on her but I couldn't lead her for the life of me. She was much heavier and stronger than I was and you can picture me hanging desperately onto the rope as Heart bolts around the pasture while I sort of stumble along and skid behind her. It was not a pretty scene. I got very discouraged, I had blisters on my hands and as a result, I wasn't as faithful at practicing with her as I should have been. That is until a couple of weeks before the fair. Like cramming for a test I tried with all my might but Heart would not cooperate. I was so discouraged and I prayed and I cried to no avail. Then one day. Someone much taller and bigger and stronger than me who loved me very much took the rope. It was my father, He could command my belligerent teenage cow to follow his lead and she did because he had the power to do it. I watched in grateful awe and a few days before the fair he gave the lead rope to me and I was able to lead and show my heifer I could now teach her to follow and stop and stand “firm and immoveable”, with her feet in a perfect position for the judge. Good enough for a very nice ribbon if not a trophy, that was reserved for the very cute guy who worked every day all summer with his cows. The hard work and daily routine always paid off for him in the form of nice trophies and cash prizes not to mention the reward of satisfaction.

Here  is a picture of our 4-H club at the fair. I am the last one on the right. The “cute guy” is third from the left and the suave brother the third from the right.

When we would prepare our animals for the fair we would wash them and feed them and keep fresh straw down for them to lay on and clean up behind them and comb them and groom them. They got the best feed there was. They got to stay in the stalls out of the storms or the heat. They were pretty spoiled cattle. Away from the heat in the summer and in winter away from the cold. They became our pets and we loved them. We spent a lot of time with them.

Here is my brother gently butting heads with his very tame cow! Show off!! :)

Jesus said, speaking of the last days when the wicked will be burned as stubble, “but unto you that fear my name shall the son of righteousness arise with healing in his wings and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves in a stall.” The same sweet comparison when he said “gather her chickens under her wings”

Doctrine and Covenants 29:2- Who will gather his people even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, even as many as will hearken to my voice and humble themselves before me, and call upon me in might prayer. Also see Matthew 23:37.

Sometimes when life gets hard we need to turn to a bigger, taller and greater power (our Heavenly Father) We need to let him show us the way. A big project like your working on your own personal progress in any field might be such an occasion.

Sometimes we might face a lot of opposition from others. I learned a lesson again one day from the bovine creatures.

One day, later in our married life, I walked by the corral. At this time we had both dairy cattle and beef cattle. There were three red and white Hereford bulls in the corral.

They are short and stocky built. They were all eating together from a manger in the middle of the corral. Then, enters the much taller bigger black and white Holstein bull He barges into the corral and begins butting one of the bulls away and into the fence and knocked him down. Then he went to each of the other bulls and did the same. How rude, I thought, feeling pretty sorry for the shorter bulls. Then, it happened. All three red bulls who had been picked on, got together over by the barn door and had a little meeting, then together they charged the bigger black and white Holstein bull and together they pushed him away from the hay and across the corral into the fence. He fell crashing down, breaking the fence and ran away from the scene. Did you ever wonder where the term “bully” came from? I think I saw it first hand.

There is strength in families and good friends. Even in times when you are alone, you can stand up for what is right with angels at your side who are summoned by your prayers.

D&C 84:88- and whoso receiveth you, there will I be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.
Psalms 34:37 the angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and deliverth them.

We can find true joy and strength to do what is right by summoning help from God above and trusting in his power, you can do just as Jesus taught and “stand in holy places and be not moooved! “

Pain and Healing

I wanted to share this quote with family and friends so it is my first attempt at making a picture quote. I have been studying about healing. The rest of this wonderful quote by elder Orson F. Whitney is as follows No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the developement of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and himility. all that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called children of God, and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire." (quoted in Improvement Era, march, 1066.211) President Faust closed his conference talk with this testimony: “With all my heart and soul, I believe in the healing power that can come to us as we follow the counsel of the Savior ‘to forgive all men’ (D&C 64:10).” I share this testimony. Healing does come. In fact, it’s my experience that the Savior doesn’t heal souls by simply restoring us to our former state of wellness. When He heals, He graciously overdoes it. He makes us healthier than we ever were before the onset of the affliction. His objective is our happiness and peace. June 2012 Ensign “Finding Peace Through Forgiveness -name withheld As Elder Dallin H. Oaks has taught: “Healing blessings come in many ways, each suited to our individual needs, as known to Him who loves us best. Sometimes a ‘healing’ cures our illness or lifts our burden. But sometimes we are ‘healed’ by being given strength or understanding or patience to bear the burdens placed upon us.”All that will come may be “clasped in the arms of Jesus.”All souls can be healed by His power. All pain can be soothed. In Him, we can “find rest unto [our] souls.”Our mortal circumstances may not immediately change, but our pain, worry, suffering, and fear can be swallowed up in His peace and healing balm. also quoted by April 2011 conference by Kent F. Richards 2 Ne 2:2 thou knowest the greatness of God; and he shall consecrate thine afflictions for thy gain.

Returned With Honor

Returned With Honor Missionaries leave home usually as a young 19 year old boy and return a 21 year old man. That is what happens. Bright and shiny and all polished with a lift in his step and a sparkle in his eyes. He is ready for the next chapter in his life and right now just loving the reunion with his family. After two years away there are several new people to meet. New by way of marriage, and birth. We have them both. We are anxious to hear all about his adventures in Japan and the people he met there as he served the Lord bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to a non-Christian people. It is so rewarding to share something most precious with others.

Oh Robin in the Snow why did you come now? I'd like to know. Fast on the berries, sit in my tree. Thank your for sharing your beauty with me. You taught me today to share and to brighten another's way. My burden's are lighter Because of your ray. I had so much fun taking pictures of these gorgeious birds from my livingroom window. I could get very close without startling them. I am grateful that I could have a chance to see them and to photograph them up so close.

ANGEL IN POLAND

Angel in Poland ; No blame is placed on the station or people we met but on our own lack of research and foresight and preparation.
This is how it looked in 1945. It looked similar 1991 In 1991 My husband and I were in Poland on business. Since it was our first time abroad, we decided to take a trip to Germany and Austria. We had rented a car in Lodz and had toured and worked around Poland and planned to drive it to Poznan to a big old train depot and take a train late at night which would take us to Berlin When we discussed this with our car rental agent, Jerzy (pronounced Yerzy),he questioned us and looked at our tickets. He explained “this is not good for you” he said it over and over again in his Polish accent. He was very concerned. He finally said. “I will take you there.”
It was 126 miles (over 2 hours one way) to Poznan and we couldn't believe that he would do this. Even at no extra charge. He met us in the evening in Lodz with an employee to help and drove about half way and delivered our rental car there with the employee and then we got in the car with Jerzy and he drove the rest of the the long distance to Poznan.
It was about midnight when we were to board our train. As we approached the station with Jerzy, we could see that on the outside and inside were many young soldiers who were all quite inebriated. We found no one who spoke English and without Jerzy we would have been in deep trouble.I became very frightened. Jerzy helped us obtain our tickets and then led us out through the menagerie of train cars in the dark to find our train. The train we were to be on had been moved to another track and we had a hard time finding it.. It was dark, poorly lit, dirty and scary. When we got there Jerzy handed the attendant our tickets and took us on the train car and found our berth then asked "do you have any Zlotych" (Polish money)? We did not. He then handed us a large sum of money for which he would not take payment. We found later that we really needed to have that money in order to pay fees and buy food and other needed items on the long train ride.
We were ushered into a little semi private berth where there were two benches facing each other. They were very old but upholstered in a plush burgundy colored upholstery fabric on the straight stiff cushions. I later learned that it was very dirty and wherever you touched it the dark sooty dust would rub off. There was a quiet woman and boy and a man also seated in the car across from us. They didn't look at us or speak to us. They departed early on in the journey and we were then alone This train stopped in every town it passed and they were about 7 miles apart. When it would stop it would screech and rock like the engineer had slammed on the brakes. Then a very stiff acting soldier would come in looking and sounding very much like a world war I movie and gruffly and abruptly shout something in languages we did not understand. We would show our passports and tickets and then they would leave.
There was a scruffy, sloppy looking man staggered in as drunk as could be and demanded something we couldn't understand about three times. Finally my husband said. "We only speak English". He then shouted “Beer !”. We shrugged and indicated we had none so he left. The train stopped about every twenty to thirty minutes all night long. I was totally traumatized by the whole experience.
Today, a train ride from Poznan to Berlin is a little over 3 hours. It must have taken us almost twice that long with all the stops but finally morning came and we were in Berlin tired, hungry and dirty but glad to be alive. The Berlin wall had just fallen two years prior and there was freedom in the air. We shall ever cherish the kindness of a man in Lodz Poland who ran a car rental business. He chose to be our guardian angel. He guided us, taught us and even paid the way. His actions were completely Christlike and we are still grateful over 20 years later. From that time on, every time we traveled to Poland, Jerzy would meet us at the airport and drive us to our hotel and leave a rental car with us. Often when I reach out a hand to help someone I am inspired by the memory of this unselfish charitable deed we received from a stranger, who became a beloved friend, in a far country.

Lesson to Journal or "Our Kid History"-

Our Son RAM just turned 39. I found this funny birthday picture of him the year he turned 8. We were staying at my brother's cabin and I had forgotten my decorating tips so he just got a plain cake and some candy on it. It was fun to recreate the picture in our very own version of "Kid History". I even found the entry in my journal of that day and was able to copy that and give it too him. His aunt and uncle took him fishing in the morning and the kids went tubing in the river after that. It is a shallow slow river so don't worry. The girl on the left is a cousin KR and the girl on the right is is little sister RPM in the original picture. We had to subtitute another sister for the cousin on the left but it was so much fun to do. By the way. I also made a cute mickey mouse cake for a birthday party 3 days later. That picture was in the journal. I will add it here also.
There has been a lot happen in the last 31 years raising 6 children and some foster children along the way and life isn't always easy or perfect but I love this scripture. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. RAM is now a brilliant lawyer, father of 8 and very good man. Sigh, I am so blessed to have him and his 5 other siblings as my children. Thanks God, for loaning them too me and for their spouses and the the 30 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren they have brought into my life. Life's lesson: KEEP A JOURNAL

Not all by me but I thought they were pretty neat. so view this with love and you won't gain one ounce for it! Just feel the love.

44 years later

Today was our middle son's birthday so I decorated a cake for him just like the one he got when he was 4. He even remembered it 44 years later. From a picture of course but I think that is still amazing. He has a memory like that! The picture at age 4 was with his older brother but the second picture is with his younger brother depicting the scene. It is such fun to relive such happy memories.

Fathers are pretty special. They have a huge influence on their families. I am ever grateful for a wonderful father and an amazing husband who is father to 6, grandfather to 30 and great grandfather to 3. He is revered by all of them. We also enjoy a few extra people who have become a special part of our family in different ways. We will get together for almost any reason we can find but a special holiday like this one is even better.

Isn't she a doll? she is 5 1/2 years old and very smart. One day at a family picnic this converstion went on. 18 year old boy cousin Taylor: "Rachel , if you eat your carrots then your eyes will be so good that you might be able to see right through the roof of that house next door" Rachel: "huh ah (no) Only ASIANS can do that !" I think that my Asian friends will love this the most but don't be too flattered. She has Asians and Aliens mixed up!

Celebrate

I love the 4th of July. I love flag ceremonies and the whole gathering of friends who feel the same way. America is a beautiful place and in spite of it's struggles I truly believe that we will all be OK and that things will turn out good in the end. If you don't love America and you live here then you should travel and see and feel the difference and also the wonderful things and people who exist all over the world. The whole world is a wonderful place full of people who are all our brothers and sisters because we have the same loving Heavenly Father. Celebrate the good in the world! Every day! Celebrate the good things!

Brotherly Love

I love this picture of three brothers who love each other and have a lot of fun together. Can't you just see it in their faces? What a blessing for them to have each other and a family like that. Everything may not be perfect but it sure helps one through the rough spots to have strong family bonds.

Wedding anniversary and musings

It has been a long time since I have blogged but I have decided to get back with it and record and share some good things from my life. Things that may help or inspire others. I hope at least that they help someone see the every day ordinary happy life of a Mormon Grandma and the family that surrounds me and my wonderful husband of 53 years. We just celebrated out 53rd wedding anniversary by spending a weekend with out youngest daughter and her family with four delightful children. The most outstanding thing about this family is that there is not much fighting. The kids really love each other and exhibit that. There is a lot of teasing going on though and a lot of good natured fun and hard work. Ball games, plays, picnics, gardening, raising 4-H lambs for the county fair and serving others. Serving in the church and teaching others of their testimonies of Christ. We even got to watch some great fireworks. We spent Sunday afternoon with four of our grown children and their families and some extended family for a party in our honor. We had a wonderful time and are so very blessed. Our son made a cupcake display with our wedding picture on the top like a cake topper. It was so cute.

19 dresses for WCA

I just donated 19 little dresses sizes 3-8 to the Women's children's alliance. The pictures are of only 14 of them because there are duplicates of some. It took a few weeks with interuptions to get them done but I had them almost done in 2 weeks then took another to finish up. My hope is that the little girls and their moms will be delighted with these new little dresses. They are all poly/cotton and easy to fit and no buttons or zippers so they are durable. Most of the fabric was donated by ladies from my LDS ward. They were so generous when I mentioned it.I buy the elastiac and thread and interfacing plus some matching fabric. I have already made up most of my own fabric and with some of their fabric. The first batch of 19 (I don't know why I ended up with 19 both times ) went to Ethiopia. I also sent 6 dresses and shirts and underwear that was given to my by others.

There is a huge need out there for help in so many ways. This is just a small thing that I can do. It feels good. My greatest goal is to lift a burden and let them know that someone cares.

Great grandson is here-

He is so cute. We couldn't be more pleased unless we could be there to hold him in person.
